We pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel. We will visit the Historic Center of Cusco in the afternoon: its “Plaza de Armas” or main square which was also the center of the Inca Empire, its Cathedral of the colonial period, the Inca Temple of “Qoricancha” or Temple of the Sun; then we are going to visit the complexes of Sacsayhuaman, monument of 3 platforms in a zigzag shape with huge stones; Qenqo, an important and sacred place for Inca’s ceremonies; Pucapucar which was part of defense of Cusco in Spanish conquest times and finally Tambomachay which was possibly considered like the temple of the water, there are aqueducts that run through the terraced rocks; from this place we descend back to the city.
We departure from Cusco by bus and travel to Ollantaytambo where you can buy the last minute personal gears, then we move on Km. 82, the starting point of the this amazing trek, and begin the hike through the mountains, appreciating agricultural terraces, valleys, the flora and fauna of the region. Our first campsite is called Wayllabamba, we are going to have dinner here and head to the tents for the night.
After breakfast, we continue our hike to the highest point of the route; it’s called Warmihuañuska (the Dead Women’s pass) at 4200 m or 13780ft above the sea level, observing different ecological zones and microclimates, beautiful views of its mountains. Then we will descend to 3600 masl to the second campsite called Pacaimayo. We are going to have a delicious dinner and a well-deserved rest in tents.
After breakfast, we will continue our journey, you can see small archaeological groups such as Runrukay, Sayacmarca, and Phuyupatamarca along the way, then we are going to descend to our third campsite located at the forest called Wiñayhuayna at 2 660 masl. This will be our last night on the famous “Inca Trail”.
After an early breakfast we will continue the trek to enjoy the sunrise at Inti Punku or “Sun-gate”, the privileged entrance to the citadel of Machu Picchu. We will have the guided tour for around 2 hours; Machu Picchu is preserved in its integrity because it was not destroyed by the Spanish conquerors. At opportune hour we descend towards the station of Aguas Calientes to catch the train that goes to Ollantaytambo and then we will take the bus to Cusco. Transfer to the hotel.
